Paul of the Cross

Paul of the Cross
(1694–1775)
   Order Founder and Saint.
Paul was born Paolo Francesco Danei in Ovado, Italy. At the age of twenty-six, he became a hermit and he drew up the Rule for a new order which became known as the Passionists. The first house opened in 1737 and the Rule was approved by Pope Benedict XIV. Paul himself was regarded as one of the most impressive preachers of his age and he was much sought after as a spiritual director. The Passionists are known for their mission work and for their conducting of retreats. There is also an order of Passionist nuns who lead a strictly enclosed contemplative life.
